In the fourth innings, the hosts were able to defeat a 378-run goal thanks to an unbroken 269-run partnership between Joe Root and Jonny Bairtsow for the fourth wicket. Stand in India skipper Jasprit Bumrah was names India's player of the series for his 23 wickets. When play began on Tuesday. England score was 119 runs adrift and an early strike of two  could change the momentum for India. But the visitors were simply too flat, and their bowlers too wayward. Soome of the field settings and tatics were curious. As many as 65 of Root's 142 runs came square of the wicket on the off-side and 36 came via the flick shot through the mid-wicket.It mean the bowling sides of  the wicket. Barring a few overs from Bumrah just before and after tea on Day four, the rest of the Indian bowlers just didn't exert any pressure.

Joe Root, who now has 28 test hundreds, got to three figures first, courtesy a delectable late cut off an utterly disappointing Mohammad Siraj, whose ploy of using the scrambled seam deliveries consistently instead of the seam up ball, merits some hard talk from the coaching staff. Either in celebration, or in seach of a hefty IPL contract, Root the reverse scooped Shardul Thakur for a six. Thakur seems to have dropped at least 10kms in pace from the high 130s and the occosional 140 kmph mark he consistently hit in Australia and South Africa.

Bairstow got to his second hundred of the game off Ravindra Jadeja, who strangely was told to keep bowling over the wicket, which negated any chances of him taking wickets. The beefy Yorkshireman, who was terrorized by the incoming delivery when the series was played last year, got into wonderful positions to meet the same ball early in both the innings. The result: compact centuries in each innigs, a feat last registered by Andrew Strauss for England in Chennai in 2008.There had previously been only two successful fouth innings chases above 200 at Edgbaston. But with the 'Bazball' approach, England are rewriting history books.

In the meantime, England thrashed India by seven wickets on the fifth day of the fifth Test as Joe Root hammered his 11th Test century since 2021 and Jonny Bairstow hit his second century of the rescheduled Edgbaston Test.

Root (142 not out off 173 balls) and Bairstow (114 not out off 145 balls) scored the necessary 119 runs in an hour and a half to square the Pataudi Trophy series at 2-2 and prevent India from winning its first series in England since 2007.

The successful 378-point chase is also the highest England has ever attempted in a Test match. After successfully chasing 277, 299, and 296 against New Zealand, England's 378 against India became them the first side in Test cricket to successfully chase four 250+ runs in a row. In their 269-run undefeated streak, Root and Bairstow were effective, faultless, and dominant as England's Bazball winning streak continued.
