International Yoga Day to be celebrated on 21 June, 2022

“Yoga is a light, which once lit will never dim. The better your practice, the brighter your flame.” ― B.K.S Iyengar

Yoga is a 5,000-year-old body, mind, and spirit discipline. This Hindu philosophical school has gained significance when it was founded in India with the goal of transforming one's body and mind. It is a priceless gift from the old Indian tradition to humanity. It teaches how to manage one's mind, body, ideas, and behaviors while also bringing man and nature closer together. As a result, it is seen as a comprehensive approach to excellent health and well-being. Don't confuse Yoga with exercise; it's a method for cultivating a sense of oneness with nature, the world, and oneself.

Why is International Yoga Day celebrated on 21st June?

The United Nations General Assembly determined on December 11, 2014, that every year on June 21st, the International Day of Yoga will be observed. It happened when the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, while speaking to the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2014, said that the International Day of Yoga will be approved on June 21, 2014.

The date of June 21 has been chosen as the International Day of Yoga because it is claimed that on this day, the first yogi, known as the Adiyogi, faced south and gazed upon the Saptarishis, or Seven Sages. His earliest pupils, the Saptarishis, were instrumental in disseminating the science of Yoga across the world. As a result, this day is extremely significant in human history.

International Participation

Around 175 countries from all around the world, including China, Canada, and the United States, support the resolution. As a result, this resolution received the most support.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a well-known international humanitarian, also proposed the concept of observing World Yoga Day in December 2011. He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts and said "Without governmental support, any philosophy, religion, or culture has a hard time surviving. The UN's formal recognition of Yoga will now help to propagate the benefits of the practise over the globe."
